Sicily: Temple of Concordia, Agrigento
Sicily has some of the greatest classical Greek and Roman sites in the world, but thankfully is not on the tourist mass market trail, giving this tour an element of exclusivity and even adventure. Culturally and socially Sicily should be viewed as separate from Italy, and the unique programme of visits to a number of private palazzos, which include dinner in some, lunch in another and tea or drinks in others, will offer a privileged insight into a passing world, which is still remarkably successful at keeping modernity at bay. The tour has been devised with the help of Cristina Madden, whose family have had a long association with the country and its society.
Itinerary (10 nights-11 days)
Although the tour starts with arrival in Catania airport and a first night in Syracuse, its focal point must be Palermo where four nights will be spent. The four hotels chosen are excellent of course, but particularly noted for their individuality and charm. All dinners other than those at private venues are at the hotels, but most lunches will be en route and are not included. A number of the private venues are mentioned, but these specific ones cannot be guaranteed for all dates. Where changes are inevitable, alternative equivalent options will be offered
Day 1 Arrive Catania in the afternoon. Be met by Cristina Madden and transfer to Hotel Grande in Syracuse for the first night.
Day 2 Visit Syracuse. Greek theatre and archaeological site in the morning, the Doric temple of Athena, now the Duomo, amidst the baroque splendour of the island of Ortygia. Possibly tea in the private Palazzo Beneventano. Overnight again at the Grande, Syracuse.
