Being the home of the "0" Meridian, which bisects the Greenwich Royal Observatory, galvanised London into a passion of building not seen since Victorian times, to usher in the new millennium in style. However well you know London there is something substantial and important that will be new to you.

BA LONDON EYE. The biggest (450 ft.,100m) diameter Ferris Wheel in the world. See London as you have never seen it before. www.londoneye.com

BRITISH MUSEUM - GREAT COURT. It took a multi million pound project to open up the Great Court in which the Reading Room of the British Library had been obscured for generations, and cut of from the general public. Now it has been cleared and opened up into a spectacular glassed over wonderful space. And as it forms the very centre of the Museum it has totally changed the BM experience. There are also some exciting new galleries covering Africa and the Americas.

TATE MODERN - At Bankside (South Bank near Southwark Bridge). Opened May 2000. This has become a much enlarged replacement for the modern art side of the much loved Tate Gallery. Arguably the most significant new modern art gallery in the world to open in Y2000. www.tate.org.uk

SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE THEATRE. Exact working reconstruction of the 17th century theatre. See Shakespeare’s plays as performed in his lifetime or just take a tour round the theatre including the stage. Visit the Globe Exhibition. www.shakespeares-globe.org

SOMERSET HOUSE. One of London's finest and grandest 18th century buildings now at last accessible to the public, housing the Courtauld Institute paintings and the Gilbert Collection of silver and gold and micromosaics and soon to come treasures of the St Petersburg Hermitage Museum.www.somerset-house.org.uk

ELTHAM PALACE. Quite close to Greenwich. One of the oldest royal palaces, boyhood home of HenryV111, sadly neglected for nearly 300 years, but rebuilt in the 1930’s by Stephen Courtauld, and now with its superb Art Nouveau interiors wonderfully restored, making this the best example of the period’s furnishings in England. www.english-heritage.org.uk

VINOPOLIS - CITY OF WINE. All aspects of all the world’s wines, covering all the continents. The wine buffs dream but also a great way to start learning for a beginner. www.vinopolis.co.uk

PLUS...the multitude of attractions of the South Bank wharves, Oxo Tower, Gabriel’s, Butlers, Hays Galleria. Also Churchill’s of Britain at War museum, The Operating Theatre Museum, London Dungeon and the Clink Museum, and Southwark Cathedral, the oldest in London. All the above with the exception of Greenwich, Eltham Palace and Somerset House are to be found along the walkeable MILLENNIUM MILE (which is more like two miles!)
